“We are thirsting for Radio Lumière.”
That is how one pastor described the longing in his community.
For more than 50 years, Radio Lumière has been a voice of hope in Dame Marie, a small town located on the far western tip of Haiti. The station was first established by missionaries Jay and (LOTM Board member) Beth Weaver, and over the decades the local churches and families have come to deeply love and depend on Radio Lumière for Biblical teaching, encouragement, and the reminder that God loves them and has not forgotten them.
For many years, a Radio Lumière transmitter on a nearby mountaintop allowed the message of the Gospel to reach communities across western Haiti. But over time the equipment at that site was lost due to theft and storm damage. Today, only a very small station operates from downtown Dame Marie, and it cannot reach many of the surrounding communities that once relied on it.
Yet the pastors and believers there have not stopped asking.
In fact, they have been pleading with us to restore the mountaintop station so the message of Christ can once again be heard throughout the region.
Because we listen to the needs of the Haitian church, we are planning to rebuild this station. The tower and building still exist, but we must replace critical equipment including solar panels, batteries, transmitters, security fencing, and protection for the site.
This project will allow the signal to once again reach more than 10,000 listeners who depend on Radio Lumière for encouragement and discipleship.
At the same time, this region has suffered greatly.
Hurricane Melissa’s outer bands battered southern Haiti for eight days, bringing relentless rain and destruction before the storm strengthened and swept across Jamaica and Cuba. While Jamaica received much of the international attention, tragically more lives were lost in Haiti.
Sadly, Haiti is often forgotten.
But the believers there remain strong in their faith. They continue to pray—for their families, their churches, and now for the restoration of this radio station so that the voice of the Gospel can once again be heard clearly in southwestern Haiti.
Today, they are praying for this project.
