Carrefour is a western suburb of Port-au-Prince, the capital and largest city in Haiti. It is the location of Radio Lumiere's flagship station and office headquarters, located on a street named Cote Plage 18.
As is the norm, Radio Lumiere struggles to pay for electricity, which is unreliable at its best and non-existent at its worst. The station relies on a very large bank of 12 volt batteries and a generator to use as a backup. Fuel is expensive and depending on the socio-economic conditions at any given time, it can be hard to procure.
So as to provide more dependable and affordable energy, we installed a rooftop solar generated power system. With plenty of available room on the roof, we installed the first portion of a large system that now provides more dependable and consistent electricity while reducing Radio Lumiere's recurring utility costs.
This project consisted of rooftop solar panels, a DC wiring system, charge controller, inverter, transfer switching, a bank of batteries, and additional electrical components and systems. We also did some painting and carpentry work.
